HUNTING FOR CLIENTS

In 2011 I became a life coach and started working for a coaching business after a short career in sales and marketing. I was 23 and grateful to be getting paid doing what I loved.

 

The first few years were exciting, especially when I started enrolling my first clients, making an impact with them, and slowly growing.

 

At the time, my primary method for getting clients was to go to seminars and collect heaps of business cards. I would travel around the country and go to one in particular called The Millionaire Mind Intensive.

 

You want to talk about really working the room?

 

That was me. Little five minute connections with everyone there. Darting from person to person during bathroom and lunch breaks. 70-100 times per event. I’d walk away with a big stack of business cards and tiny little surface-level relationships.

And then I would pester all of them to either book a sales call with me or someone from our team. Rinse and repeat. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

 

This was what we considered “marketing.”

 

Although my roster eventually grew to 23 clients, I was totally burned out. The grind had worn down my joy of coaching and I wasn't serving my clients to the level I knew they needed.

 

I had shaken hands with enough people in hotel bathrooms to last forty lifetimes.

 

I was tired of living in the digital stone age.

MY STORY AS A VIDEO

FAKE 'TIL IT ACHES

So from 2015-2016, I took the little time I had leftover from my full client load and poured it into building an online brand.

 

My goal was for it to become the end of hunting for clients. I geared it around helping men with their social skills.

 

I niched down.

 

Made my customer avatar.

 

Put together my “irresistible offer.”

 

I grew my youtube following to nearly 1000 subscribers and 100,000 views.

 

I wrote a book.

 

Made three courses.

 

I studied copywriting and web design.

 

Slaved over my website and email newsletter.

 

Cranked out content every single day.

 

I learned how to "growth hack" and hired a social media team to blast my content out to everyone.

I had the appearance of a highly successful entrepreneur. On the surface, I had what every coach dreamed of.

Truth was...underneath the busy facade, I was a total mess.

 

The money coming in from the business wasn't enough to keep up with what was being spent. Which meant less hiring help and more doing everything by myself.

 

Meanwhile client contracts would come to an end and so I was back to hunting for more. Which meant even more travel and hotel bathrooms.​

All of my life was eaten up with trying to keep everything afloat. A strict regiment of 70-80 hour non-stop grinding weeks.

Thank God I wasn't 30 yet.

 

Because the amount of energy needed to keep up all of this would have killed me if I wasn't in my twenties.

Look, while I was doing this, I was still "living my purpose." I was still helping people. I was still coming from integrity.

 

This should have worked. But I knew all of it was wrong.

This happy go-lucky, positive energy, mindset warrior was just a public persona...and there were deep, deep wounds I wasn't ready to face yet.

The urge to quit coaching altogether began growing inside me. My wife wanted to start a family with me. What time could I possibly give them?

Frustrated, exhausted, terrified. Three great words to describe why I didn't sleep much those days.

DISCOVERING MY MESSAGE

While weighing my options in 2017, a good friend (a fellow coach) called me to catch up.  She was younger than me and would pick my brain around business from time to time.

 

Ten minutes into our conversation, she tells me, “I just got a client who paid me $40,000. And they paid in full.”

 

I was shell-shocked. Our most expensive package was $1000 a month. How could someone younger than me do this?

 

How could someone with zero online presence pull this off?

 

I thought prices like that were for people with a huge following.

 

The more I spoke with her, the more pissed off I got. 

 

She had less experience, less of a track record, and less training.

And here she was, totally out of left field achieving what I could only dream of.

I did everything the right way. I got certified. Read books, took classes, and improved my coaching skills religiously. Hired business coaches and marketing teams. Went through at least 20 different courses on growing a business.

 

But she had a way of talking about her coaching that punched much harder than I did. 

She had a unique message that resonated on a deeper level than mine did.

She lived this message with a greater alignment than I did.

 

She was whole where I was hollow.

I had looked everywhere "out there" for the answers. She was the first person to show me I had to go deeper within if I really wanted results.

I had to bring who I was at a primal level up to the surface and create a message around this alignment.

So I began a journey to do that. I hired her mentor and we started diving into my raw emotions around the coaching industry.

I was furious with not being able to raise my prices. Run my business full time. Having to sell myself constantly and prove my value over and over again.

Underneath this rage was fear. I was afraid to ask for more money. Afraid to go out on my own. Afraid to be vulnerable instead of who I was pretending to be.

Afraid my clients and friends wouldn't accept me for me...and my name would be slandered and dragged through the mud.

Here's the crazy thing I discovered...

 

This fury and fear were actually signals from deep within me to embrace my calling. Instead of burying these emotions and hoping they would go away once I became more successful, I tapped into them.

 

It was in these depths that I discovered I was meant to help coaches. I was meant to guide them through the very things that pissed me off and terrified me.

 

Instead of running to the next magic bullet, I was meant to create something new that challenged the status quo and helped others just like me.

And the only way to blaze a new trail was to confront everything I was afraid of.

 

I quit my coaching position and struck out entirely on my own.

 

I quadrupled my prices.

 

I made a rallying cry for owning your value and shook coaches out of the mold of playing small.

 

I started landing high paying clients left, right and center. Within a year, I hit six figures.

I didn't have a big following. I didn't have a big brand. But I had a clear message and it was fueled by me walking the talk for the first time in my life. This clarity and vitality became the foundation of my Primal Code blueprint.

Since 2017 I've been helping my clients get out of their head and into their calling. My mission is to help coaches create wildly lucrative brands that annihilate the status quo.

The reason I live by this credo is simple.

When you own your unique value and are aligned with your primal self, not only are you more successful in business, everyone around you benefits.

Your family, friends, clients, and community benefit from your truth. You're less full of shit, more honest, and more unapologetically you. This gives them permission and frees them to do the same.
